Julia Francis

Artist’s Statement

Expression of movement through the human form is the catalyst for Francis’  multi-media works. Currently she is investigating and incorporating into her practice the bold strokes and fluidity within Japanese calligraphy.

Working in a spontaneous and intuitive manner, yet with an element of careful direction, Francis translates these ink markings into wire sculptures in a process of artistic alchemy. Each sculpture aims to capture a moment, reflecting various emotive reactions to the turbulence of human life.

Both the visual appearance and meaning behind the sculptures are enhanced by investing them with a theatricality, incorporating elements of nature or  embellishing surfaces with various materials. The aim of this approach is to reveal to the viewer, the unfamiliar or unknown, and to encourage reflection upon their own experiences.
